Best Credit Cards for Car Rental Insurance Of January 2025 – Forbes Advisor

Several American Express cards offer secondary auto rental collision coverage¹, including The Platinum Card® from American Express (terms apply, see rates & fees) and the American Express® Gold Card (terms apply, see rates & fees).

While secondary coverage can be sufficient in certain situations, there may be instances where primary coverage is preferable. The American Express Premium Car Rental Protection program allows you to purchase primary rental car coverage for extended periods of time. For a flat fee, you can purchase up to 42 consecutive days of primary auto rental coverage.

Two different levels of protection are offered—the highest level comes with up to $100,000 in coverage against damage or theft, $100,000 in coverage against accidental death or dismemberment, $15,000 in secondary medical expenses per person and up to $5,000 in secondary coverage per person for personal property.

This coverage is worldwide, excluding Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand.

Activating American Express Premium Car Rental Protection involves enrolling your American Express card in the program. Subsequently, when you use that American Express card for an auto rental, the American Express Premium Car Rental insurance automatically becomes effective and your card is charged for the premium payment.
